HIV/AIDS Overview

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that specifically targets and weakens the body’s immune system, particularly by infecting CD4 cells (T cells), which play a crucial role in defending against infections. If untreated, HIV can progress to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), a stage where the immune system is severely compromised, making the body highly vulnerable to opportunistic infections and certain cancers.

HIV is mainly spread through blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk. It can spread through unprotected sexual contact, sharing of contaminated needles, and from mother to child during childbirth or breastfeeding. Over time, HIV gradually depletes the body’s immune defenses, making it harder to fight off infections and diseases.

While there is currently no cure for HIV, advances in medical treatment—particularly entiretroviral therapy (ART)—have revolutionized management of the virus. ART involves a combination of medications that inhibit the virus from replicating, allowing individuals with HIV to maintain a near-normal lifespan if the virus is well-controlled. This treatment also reduces the likelihood of transmitting HIV to others.
